What Is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical exam is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to ensure that commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers are physically and medically qualified to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

Drivers who pass the exam receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC), commonly known as a DOT medical card, which is typically valid for up to 24 months.
